I’m trying to learn for my Writing class and I’m stuck. Can you help?
Question 1 – Case Study
Robert has tried various methods in the past to help his students learn to spell well. He has had students work from a spelling book that includes exercises to help them learn the words. He has allowed students to develop their own spelling lists. He has given them spelling words from units of instruction in other subjects. The one thing that each of these approaches has had in common is that they all involved drill and practice. He has always had students write their words multiple times and/or make flash cards and practice their words.
However, Robert isn’t sure this is the best way to learn how to spell. One of his colleagues has her students use all the words she wants them to learn in several creative writing mini-projects throughout the week. Robert decides to find out which approach would benefit his students the most.
He begins by placing all of his students’ names in a hat. He then draws the names of half of the students. These students will use the writing method that Robert’s colleague suggested. The others will continue to use the drill-and-practice methods that they have used in the past. He tells his students that he wants to discover which method (of learning to spell words) he should use in class, thinking that this way his students will understand why they are doing different things. At the end of the week he gives the class a spelling test. He calculates the average score for each group and compares them.
- What kind of study did Robert conduct? Justify your classification.
- What method did Robert use to assign his students to groups?
- What would you call the group that learned their spelling words via writing? Why?
- If one group outperforms the other on the final spelling test, can Robert infer that the method of instruction was the cause? Why, or why not?
- What could Robert do to improve his study?
Question 2 – Piaget and Vygotsky’s Theories of Development
Assume that Piaget and Vygotsky met to discuss cognitive development. Explain how each of them would talk about how knowledge is constructed, the purpose of education, and the role of the teacher in the learning process.
Urie Bronfenbrenner’s theory of development primarily focuses on the social contexts in which children live and the people who influence their development. Erik Erikson presents a developmental view of people’s lives in stages. Lawrence Kohlberg stresses that moral development primarily involves moral reasoning and occurs in stages. Why are these three theories of human development important for teaching and learning? What does each theory contribute to our understanding of socio-emotional development during childhood and adolescence?
Discuss what intelligence is, how it is measured, theories of multiple intelligences, the neuroscience of intelligence, and some controversies and issues about its use by educators.
